Fall in Colorado, 2025
What you missed if you didn't get out.
There’s no place more spectacular than Colorado as the summer winds down. During the last three days of September, my wife and I headed to the high country, spending two nights in our favorite town, Breckenridge, enjoying the food, the savory beers, and the surrounding scenery. Breckenridge is an excellent base of operations for exploring the fall foliage in the surrounding mountains.
On day two, we drove north from Breckenridge, joined Swan Mountain Road winding the south side of the Blue River Arm of Dillon Reservoir, before taking Route 6 through Keystone and A-Basin ski resorts. From there, the short climb begins toward the summit of Loveland Pass.

The pass was busy on this day, with the parking area at the summit full of cars and people traversing the many trails that depart from the parking area, or just enjoying the views.
A short drive down the east side to an overlook reveals another spectacular view, looking down on Interstate 70 just before it enters the east portal of the Eisenhower Tunnel. The majestic Citadel is visible, flanked by Hagar Mountain to the west and Mt. Bethel to the east. The area has plenty of trails, though summiting some of the peaks are not for casual hikers.

Nearby Frisco is pleasant, with a small-town feel and a main street lined with shops and restaurants. Bordering the west shore of Dillon Reservoir, it offers plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and recreation and is definitely worth a stop.

If you’re in Breckenridge:
Breckenridge is our favorite town in which to spend a few days. Here are some of our personal favorite establishments.
The Briar Rose — a fine dining establishment, with elegant white linen table settings, mouth-watering food, and eye-watering prices. A great place for a splurge or special occasion. Try the smoked Old Fashioned in the lounge; highly recommended. 109 Lincoln Ave. $$$$
Breckenridge Brewery — an excellent selection of craft brews, with good food thrown in. Always our first stop. 600 S Main St. $$
Rita’s — another regular stop for us, with tacos made fresh at the bar, an excellent and very extensive selection of tequilas, good music, and a hint of a dive atmosphere. Bartenders Eddie and Miko will make you feel welcome. 301 South Main Street. $$
Blue Moose—an excellent spot for breakfast located next to Breckenridge Brewery. Fast service, great breakfast, and prices easy on the wallet. 540 South Main St. $
